This week was the fourth week that Josh Grear, the Brixton Team Leader, has teamed up with another youth worker to play football on the pitch in the centre of the Loughborough Estate. They head down to the pitch twice a week and run sessions with youth that happen to be in the area.
This week there were about 14 boys who were keen to play. The group stayed for about 20 mins and were aged about 14 years and upwards.
Some of the lads had met Josh before and recognised him from the detached youth work that he has been doing around the estate. However some of the group were completely new.
Josh said that some of the group seemed to join in because they enjoyed playing the sport, while others got involved purely because there didn’t seem to be anything better for them to do with their time.
Facilitating group activiites, such as football, in public spaces is a great way to connect with the kids who just aren't being reached through other means. Many youth just arent the type that would be hanging around in youth clubs, and so might slip through the net in regards to getting help and guidance.
